Merdeka Palace (Istana Merdeka) is one of Indonesia's official presidential palaces and an enduring symbol of national sovereignty. Situated along the northern side of Merdeka Square in Central Jakarta, this grand 19th-century neoclassical estate was originally constructed during the Dutch colonial era as the residence for the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies (Paleis te Koningsplein). It gained its current name—meaning "Independence Palace"—on December 27, 1949, when the Dutch flag was lowered and the Indonesian red-and-white flag was raised for the first time following the recognition of Indonesia's sovereignty.
The palace complex features white Doric columns, expansive manicured lawns, and elegant state reception halls used for official diplomatic functions, receiving foreign heads of state, and hosting the annual Independence Day flag-raising ceremony every August 17th. While the interior functions as an active government office and official venue, the grand facade facing Merdeka Square remains a striking historical landmark along Central Jakarta's civic boulevard.
Key Highlights: Neoclassical colonial architecture, site of the historical 1949 sovereignty transfer, host venue for the annual National Independence Day ceremony, and the ceremonial courtyard fronting Merdeka Square.
Best Time to Visit: Late afternoon for viewing and photographing the grand illuminated exterior from the open paths of northern Merdeka Square. (Note: As an active presidential working palace, interior access is restricted to official government tours or special events, but the front facade is fully visible from Medan Merdeka Utara).
Located directly on Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara, reaching the palace grounds is straightforward via Central Jakarta transit:
TransJakarta BRT: Take Corridor 1, 2, or 3 and get off at Halte Monas or Halte Juanda. Walk along the northern perimeter paths of Merdeka Square straight toward the palace entrance.
KRL Commuterline: Disembark at Juanda Station (Stasiun Juanda). The palace is a short 7–10 minute walk south past the Supreme Court building (Mahkamah Agung).
Walking from Monas: It sits directly opposite the northern lawn of the National Monument park, making it an easy stop when exploring the Merdeka Square area.
