Baluran National Park (Taman Nasional Baluran) is a stunning protected wildlife reserve located at the northeastern tip of East Java, straddling the regencies of Situbondo and Banyuwangi. Famously nicknamed "Africa in Java," the park features a dramatic and unexpected landscape: rolling golden savannahs, dry monsoon forests, and volcanic backdrops dominated by the towering, extinct cone of Mount Baluran.
Spanning over 25,000 hectares, the park is home to a rich array of native Indonesian wildlife. Visitors driving along the park's main tracks frequently spot wild water buffalo (banteng), Javan rusa deer, long-tailed macaques, peacocks, and various species of eagles. The interior leads to the famous Bekol Savannah, complete with a wooden observation tower offering sweeping views across the plains, while a short drive further brings you to the pristine white-sand shores of Bama Beach, framed by coastal mangroves and coral reefs.
Key Highlights: The sweeping golden plains of Bekol Savannah resembling an African game park, spotting wild banteng (Javan bulls) and deer in their natural habitat, exploring mangrove trails, and relaxing by the coast at Bama Beach.
Best Time to Visit: Dry season (May to October) when the savannah grass turns golden-brown (creating the classic African aesthetic), animal sightings around waterholes are most frequent, and internal park dirt roads are dry and fully accessible.
Baluran National Park sits directly along the major northeastern coastal highway connecting Java to Bali:
By Car or Bus from Banyuwangi or Surabaya: Easily accessible via the main coastal highway (Pantura route). A drive from Banyuwangi north to the park entrance takes roughly 1.5 hours, while traveling from Surabaya takes about 4 to 5 hours heading east toward Situbondo.
By Private Transport/Charter: Renting a car or hiring a driver is strongly recommended to navigate the unpaved internal park roads leading from the main highway gate to Bekol Savannah and Bama Beach.
