Green Canyon Cukang Taneuh (known locally as Cukang Taneuh, meaning "Earth Bridge" in Sundanese) is one of West Java’s most breathtaking natural wonders, located in Cijulang village, roughly 31 kilometers southeast of Pangandaran. The attraction features a deep, emerald-green river canyon flanked by towering rock cliffs draped in lush tropical foliage, stalactites, and cascading waterfalls. A natural bridge formed by eroded soil spans across the top of the canyon walls, giving the gorge its traditional name.
Visitors explore the canyon by boarding brightly painted wooden motorized boats (ketek) from the Cifutad jetty, cruising up the turquoise Cijulang River for about 30 minutes. Once deep inside the narrow gorge where boats can no longer pass, visitors disembark to swim, body-raft, or navigate the crystal-clear river currents flanked by dramatic cave walls and rock formations.
Key Highlights: Scenic wooden boat cruises along emerald-green river waters, swimming and body-rafting through narrow rock canyons, stalactite caves, and hanging jungle foliage.
Best Time to Visit: Morning (around 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM during the dry season between May and October). Visiting early ensures optimal sunlight filtering into the canyon and minimizes the risk of sudden river current closures due to heavy upstream rains.
Located in the Cijulang district of Pangandaran Regency, getting to Green Canyon requires short local transit from Pangandaran town:
By Car or Motorbike: From Pangandaran beach, take a 45-minute drive eastward via the coastal provincial road toward Cijulang. Parking and ticketing facilities are available directly at the Cifutad Pier (Dermaga Cifutad).
Public Transport: Take a local public minivan (angkot) from the Pangandaran bus terminal heading toward Cijulang market, then take a short local ojek (motorcycle taxi) directly to the boat dock.
Combined Excursions: Many travelers combine a morning visit to Green Canyon with an afternoon trip to Pangandaran Beach by booking a private driver or chartered local transport for the day.
